Ciclostile Architettura è partner locale di [im]possible living, un sito web dedicato agli edifici abbandonati di tutto il mondo che fornisce servizi alle persone che su scala locale cercano di sollevare, discutere e, potenzialmente, risolvere in maniera creativa problemi di questo genere.
Si tratta di una start-up molto giovane, che nasce nel Gennaio 2011 dal desiderio di rivalutare il patrimonio mondiale degli edifici abbandonati, in contrapposizione al continuo e costante consumo di territorio cui assistiamo in buona parte dei paesi del mondo, dove vengono costruiti in continuazione nuovi edifici che in gran parte rimangono vuoti: la chiave di volta per la soluzione del problema sta nel vedere gli edifici abbandonati come una risorsa da valorizzare e non come un problema da dimenticare, o peggio ancora, da nascondere.
Il web è il naturale territorio di [im]possible living, in quanto rappresenta l’unica realtà in grado di mettere insieme la massa critica necessaria ad affrontare il problema dell’abbandono nella sua interezza (solo in Italia si stima che gli edifici abbandonati siano più di 2 milioni).
Il punto di partenza del progetto è stato la constatazione che esistono moltissimi individui che si sono impegnati in progetti di questo tipo, mappando aree più o meno grandi, aggregando community e coinvolgendo enti pubblici e privati. Ogni realtà locale ha un suo sito, una sua community, che devono essere realizzati e promossi: tutto questo lavoro richiede tempo e capacità che non tutti hanno, oltre a rendere il mondo dell'abbandono una realtà molto destrutturata, che non riesce "a fare sistema".
L'intenzione è quella di diventare un enabler ed eliminare gli scogli che possono ostacolare la realizzazione di progetti di riqualificazione durante l’intero ciclo di vita del progetto, dalla mappatura fino alla costruzione.
Il primo passo della strategia è la costruzione del più grande database di edifici abbandonati al mondo e a questo scopo è stata realizzata una versione beta del servizio, online da Dicembre 2011.

Il prodotto consiste in un sito web attraverso il quale gli utenti possono navigare tutti gli edifici abbandonati che sono stati mappati in giro per il mondo e visualizzare le relative schede, nelle quali sono disponibili una descrizione generale e alcune informazioni di dettaglio (anno di costruzione, anno di abbandono, metratura, numero di piani, ecc). Inoltre, per chi vuole adottare un approccio proattivo, il sito consente di inserire nuovi edifici abbandonati, votare quelli già inseriti e contribuire alla costruzione delle schede esistenti aggiungendo foto e video. E' anche disponibile una mobile application iPhone (la versione Android sarà disponibile a breve) per segnalare istantaneamente un nuovo edificio abbandonato. Una volta accesa, l’applicazione permette di scattare/scegliere dalla libreria una foto dell’edificio, aggiungere le informazioni essenziali e fornisce in automatico i dati geografici associati alla posizione (via, città, ecc), consentendo all’utente di modificarli qualora non fossero corretti.

Quello che contraddistingue l'approccio [im]possible living è il fatto di rendere questi strumenti veramente intuitivi e di ridurre al minimo indispensabile il tempo necessario per caricare delle nuove informazioni: questo è fondamentale per massimizzare i contributi degli utenti e consentire a tutti di prendere parte alla missione di ridare vita agli edifici abbandonati di tutto il mondo.
Le funzionalità che sono state messe a disposizione sinora rappresentano il cuore essenziale del servizio, ma il prodotto completo è molto più articolato: gli utenti, in futuro, potranno contribuire in modalità wiki alla costruzione delle schede, aggiungere nuove proposte, aggregarsi in gruppi di lavoro, attingere a una knowledge base che possa guidare le scelte dei modelli architettonico-gestionali nelle prime fasi di progetto, connettersi ad un network di professionisti, il supporto di altre lingue oltre all’inglese e molto altro ancora.
La visione è quella di realizzare il punto di riferimento globale sul tema dell’abbandono e uno strumento che consenta di abbattere tutte le barriere che ostacolano la realizzazione di progetti di riqualificazione.

It provides tools and services for people who try to raise, discuss and, potentially, solve the problem represented by the underuse of real estate, sharing their knowledge and creativity.
[im]possible living is a young start-up, born in January 2011 from the founders’ interest and desire to give new value to the global stock of abandoned buildings, in open contrast with the constant land consumption we witness in most of the world, where the ongoing trend is to build new property, often destined to remain vacant. The solution to this problem is taking an altogether new approach: abandoned buildings are not liabilities but assets that need to be made the most of.
The web is the natural habitat for [im]possible living, because it represents the only environment where the critical mass needed to face the problem of abandonment as a whole can come together (in Italy only, there are an estimated 2 millions of abandoned buildings). The starting point has been a simple observation: all over the web there are numerous examples of individuals engaged in similar projects, mapping differently sized areas, aggregating communities and getting public and private associations involved. Each one of these local units have a website, a community that needs to be kept up to date and fostered. The work involved in creating and maintaining online tools takes time and expertise that are not readily available to everyone. In addition to time and expertise constraints, the multiplication of projects makes the world revolving around the topic of abandonment very fragmented, incapable of networking.
The service wants to be an enabler and simply wipe away the hurdles that make it difficult to carry out rescue projects, from mapping to redevelopment.
The first step ahead is the construction of the biggest, most complete database of abandoned buildings in the world, and to get things started we have developed the beta version of our service.

The product is a website designed to be the simplest tool possible to browse the abandoned buildings that have been mapped all around the world and view the descriptive profiles. In each profile there is a general description of the building and a few important details, such as construction year, abandonment year, floor area, number of floors. For users who want to be proactive, the website makes it possible to add new vacant buildings, rate those already present, and contribute to the completeness of each profile by adding media content (photos and videos).
Now there is also an iPhone application designed for instantly reporting a new vacant building. Once logged in, the app allows to shoot a picture of the building on the spot or pick one from the media library, and add basic information, while automatically capturing the geographical data associated to the building’s position (street, city etc). The geographical info can be edited by the user if incorrect.
What really makes the difference with the website and apps is how fast and seamless they make the upload of new information: this is essential in order to maximize the users’ contribution, and to make it possible for everyone to join us in the mission to give new life to abandoned buildings all over the world.
The functionalities we have released so far represent the very core of our service, but the product we have in mind is much more sofisticated: in the future, our users will be able to contribute to each profile using a wiki system; they will be able to add new ideas and projects for the redevelopment of the building, team up with other users, access a knowledge base that will guide the choice of the architecture and management models in the first steps of the project, connect to a network of professionals, view information in languages other than english, and much more.
The vision is to become the global site-to-go-to on the subject of abandonment, and a tool that will remove all obstacles between redevelopment ideas and projects and their successful completion.
