“Bassa velocità in Val di Setta” a Project to rediscover with slowness the richness of the area of Setta Valley

“Bassa velocità” is a participatory project of the Unione Comuni Appennino Bolognese, that promises to enhance and redevelop the area of the Setta valley. Characterized in recent years by the construction of the Variant of Valico.

November 2016 - Study the possibility of requalification of Val di Setta. A territory that has been involved in profound changes due to the implementation of massive infrastructure projects, such as the Railway, the A1 and the Variant of Valico: The goal that has been set by the Union of the Municipalities of Bologna Apennine is that through a participatory project partly funded by the Regional Law 3 of 2010, designed by the Union and conducted by Ciclostile Architettura, a company that focuses its research on processes of regeneration by involving spaces for participation. The Val di Setta is composed by five municipalities: Marzabotto, Monzuno, Grizzana Morandi, San Benedetto Val di Sambro and Castiglione dei Pepoli, representing as always an essential link between the North and South of the peninsula. The landscapes that are situated on this path have been radically transform by the infrastructure needed for national transport, having a strong impact on the land, leaving the valley with many problems, which have been highlighted by the population of the area.

The project aims to enhance the landscape and environmental wealth of the area through a participatory processes that involve the population, to build ideas and talk about common needs, proposing an effective intervention to discuss. As explained by the Union President and Mayor of Marzabotto Romano Franchi "We want to talk to the citizens and rediscover the sense of community, because Val di Setta has changed dramatically in recent years. We believe it represents much more than a simple and quick connection between Rome and Milan. The landscapes of the valley can be emphasized through proposals that take the slowness as reference point for the appreciation of the territory, and Bassa velocità clearly defines a different way to look and enjoy the area.” The target is to use an inclusive and transparent participatory plan that leads to a series of recommendations and suggestions to be undertaken, developing a regional marketing plan, unique and supramunicipal. Only by starting from the understanding and knowledge of these places, it will be possible to improve and make known the tourism and the extremely diverse cultural offer from Val di Setta. A more informed and conscious tourism will appreciate the area in a positive way because it has very rich and diverse interest. Val di Setta already have some strengths: pedestrian and cycling paths, natural areas, archaeological sites, local activities and events that animate the places for many days during the year but it also encounters problems such is the abandonment of the former industrial areas, the difficulty on transportation by public means and the presence of critical points along the river, where the environment has been compromised. From these point citizens have to be at the center of the territorial transformation, making them the protagonists of the redevelopment plan of the valley. The points identified for the five municipalities are Vado, Quercia, Pian di Setta, Ripoli and Cà d'Onofrio. After an introductory meeting scheduled by the end of 2016 citizens who wish to participate will be invited to a site visit, helping with a plan development for the land use, which will be enjoyed by locals and tourists as final result. In this sense will include a web platform that collects data, materials and proposals in order to allow everyone to see the working product.
